Occupation of Lidra St. buffer zone
Update info on what's happening in the north: As you know municipality workers of north Nicosia weren't paid for two months. This was only the tip of the iceberg with regard to the corruption and dirty business (i.e close relations with the mafia) within the administration of Cemal Bulutogullari. During the strike the trash wasn't been collected for weeks, violent protests broke out, the rain caused flood and spread the trash all over Nicosia. As the public tension rose up, the 'government' did not take any measures to deal with the issue for a long time. Last week they suggested Cemal Bulutogullari to take some 'time off' (clearly as an attempt to cool things off rather than dealing with the issue) to which he responded by saying "he doesn't need one". Again, last week the 'government' promised to pay the workers, a promise they postponed to the next day every day. The obvious reason is that the municipality is at the edge of bankruptcy and there was no resource. Today they finally announced that the payment is done however without mentioning how the resource has been created. It is important to note that this issue is not only about payments and nothing is solved. This is a clear example of ongoing corruption and illegality at every level of administration in the north, therefore, protests will continue.
